The first Painted Lady to appear in my garden was two weeks ago, which coincided with the first flowers on the Buddleia bush.It is always a favourite with the butterflies and especially Painted Ladies. Today a total of three were enjoying the blooms along with several Red Admiral, and Peacock.

More Garden Visitors.
Although not as memorable as the species in my last post a good number of butterflies have visited my garden this summer, attracted mainly by our flowering Buddleia. Apart from the more common garden butterflies there have been visits on several occasions by the Dark Green Fritillary and more recently Wall Brown. In addition Painted Lady was first seen in the garden back in May and also today when this individual spent some time nectaring

Summer Butterflies Around the Buddleia.
Further to my recent post on our garden buddleia bush,it is still attracting the butterflies and today another Dark Green Fritillary flew in.Like other species it nectared on the blooms before resting close by, along with several Red Admirals and the ever dependable Peacock and Comma.
Of course there are always dangers and this Large White chose the wrong time to land on this bloom.A crab spider was ready and waiting for it's next meal.

The Butterfly Bush Attracts the Visitors.
Although not my favourite garden shrub,Buddleia is a must for attracting butterflies and other insects. The plant in our garden has now been in full bloom for a week and the fragrant and nectar rich flowers have so far tempted a variety of butterfly species.Today it played host to a rather belated first sight of the year in the form of a Small Tortoiseshell. It would regularly rest from feeding to sun itself on the garden fence and then return for more.
Other butterflies seen on the buddleia flowers this week have included Peacock,Red Admiral,Comma,Large and Small White,Large Skipper,Meadow Brown,Marbled White, and a Dark Green Fritillary. The latter was the first ever sighting in the garden.

Back on Bonchurch Down.
By the time I set foot on Bonchurch Down today the sunny weather of the morning had given way to cloud. However there were still plenty of Adonis Blue to see along the path as they nectared on the downland flowers.Normally in these cloudy conditions many Adonis will have taken to the shelter of the long grass at the base of the Down.
Wall Brown are now also in evidence as I disturbed several that were trying to get some warmth by basking on the path. This particular male pictured below has just flown down from a nearby buddleia bush. There are numerous buddleia plants on the slopes of the Down which are visited by an array of butterflies, including Adonis, Small Tortoiseshell ,and an attractive moth, the Hummingbird Hawk Moth.It is pictured below not too far away at Wheelers Bay feeding on red valerian.
The Meadow Brown can still be seen fluttering over the Down also stopping at flowers to feed.Unfortunately for this individual it chose a flower that hid a spider.
