Weather conditions today were not ideal with what can be described as cloudy but bright. There was just the odd short sunny period to encourage the butterflies and consequently numbers were low. However the White Admiral made several appearances feeding on bramble flowers.I hoped to register a first Silver-washed Fritillary of the year but none were forthcoming.Species to see today in Bouldnor Forest included Meadow Brown,Large Skipper, a Painted Lady, and a seemingly recently emerged Comma.

More Summer Butterflies, and Early Too.
Another sunny and warm day at Bouldnor Forest,Yarmouth and a visit around midday produced a high count of at least 12 Painted Lady. Most were seen feeding on low stands of bramble flowers. An earliest ever sighting for me was a White Admiral in flight. It seems that the first individuals are elusive and this one soon disappeared into the woodland.I was very pleased to have another early record,in fact the earliest ever for this species,a Marbled White. After a short pursuit I was able to take this photograph pictured below.Other butterflies observed were good numbers of Meadow Brown,a Glanville Fritillary, feeding on Birdsfoot trefoil, and a Large Skipper.

Chalk-hill Blues Out on West High Down.
Aside the track that leads to West High Down today were a good selection of butterflies. In particular were the first Chalk-hill Blues of the year busily flitting around at low level across the short turf. There was a good display of colourful downland flowers to entice the butterflies and among the other species encountered were Small and Large Skipper,Marbled White,Small Copper, Small Heath,Common Blue, and a possible Dark Green Fritillary.

A Bevy of Large Skippers.
Although the day started cloudy the sun was shining by noon and it seemed a good opportunity to take a walk along Afton Down in search of Adonis Blue butterflies. However on reaching Freshwater Bay I soon noticed that cloud was still lingering on the Down. Parking at the National Trust carpark at the foot of Afton Down I decided to see what butterflies were out at the rear of the site. Most notable were the number of Large Skippers nectaring on the bramble flower. Other species seen included Small Blue and Common Blue.

Butterflies in Hiding at Bouldnor.
Despite a bright and sunny afternoon the only butterflies to be seen in Bouldnor Forest today were several Meadow Brown and Speckled Wood. However the one exception was this Large Skipper that landed on a leaf right in front of me and seemed very happy to let me take its picture.

Summer Butterflies Beginning to Appear.
The recent settled warm and sunny weather has spurred on the emergence of our summer butterflies. A very common but nevertheless welcome sight are the first Meadow Brown's.On the 4th June at Bouldnor there were a flurry of them with at least twenty plus recorded and today at the same location I came across at least two Large Skipper. Rather belatedly for me was also a first sight this season of the Dingy Skipper

First Skipper Sighting of the Season.
It was a very sunny and bright start to the day but by the time I dropped into Whiteways NT carpark at 0945 this morning the dark clouds had gathered and rain was on the way. Not surprisingly the butterflies had gone to ground. However one was seen roosting on a leaf and it was my first skipper of the year. It is of course, a male Large Skipper and a worthy sighting as most first records are in June.

More Summer Butterflies on the Wing.
Despite cloudy conditions this afternoon, the warm weather encouraged the butterflies out and new species were to be seen in Bouldnor Forest. In particular, the Dark Green Fritillary was prominent with at least six individuals. These were seen mainly around a stand of Giant Thistles and also along a quiet woodland ride packed with flowering plants like clover. In addition Marbled White and Ringlet are now on the wing and in the company of White Admiral and Large Skipper.
