Still Glanvilles at Wheelers Bay

A sunny morning was followed by a build up of cloud at midday but the afternoon sun shone through and at Wheelers Bay the butterflies responded. There are still a number of Common Blues and Brown Argus and they were joined today by a fresh looking Painted Lady.
A couple of days ago a Clouded Yellow was reported  from here but I was unable to locate any today. However the Glanville Fritillaries are still out in force, some looking rather old but others fairly pristine.A sign of the lateness of the season this year.In addition I counted four Small Tortoiseshell and a couple of faded Dingy Skippers.
With the prevailing winds now coming from the south-west there will be,I hope.some not so common butterflies flying in.

Clouded Yellow,always a welcome visitor

On the way to my local pond today across several fields at Clamerkin NT,a welcome sight was a Clouded Yellow butterfly.Seen on the Isle of Wight at various times this butterfly is not normally a common sight. It is a powerful flier and I find does not usually wait around to be viewed,so I was pleased to get a quick snap while it fed on the fleabane.

First Glanville Fritillary at Wheelers Bay

Today started cloudy but by early afternoon the sun had appeared and also the first Glanville of 2012.At Wheelers Bay on the Isle of Wight I was very happy to see a Glanville today. This is nearly three weeks later than is normal for the last few years. The weather has been poor recently and that ,together with the very low web count may account for the delay in its appearance.
I was very lucky too, to see a Clouded Yellow at the Bay.It could have been at very recent arrival as the butterfly was keen to feed and rest. This was the first Clouded Yellow that I have seen since my first sight here on April 15th.
