Our evergreen shrub Berberis or Barberry is in full bloom at the end of March. It is always popular with bees and other pollinating insects. Today this male Brimstone was observed nectaring on the shrubs prolific yellow- red flowers..
We very occasionally see a Brimstone here in South East Scotland. About five years ago there were several spotted in a town in East Lothian and I suspect that a stray female had found an Alder Buckthorn plant the previous summer. Sadly the next generation of Brimstones didn't stick around. I managed to get some funding from Butterfly Conservation and bought and distributed Alder Buckthorn plants to be planted in parks and school grounds across East Lothian and the Scottish Borders. It will take a while before they are large enough to support a clutch of Brimstones, but hopefully in the future any stray females will find somewhere to lay eggs!
